Lochshell Engineering were appointed in January 2018 by Moray Council to undertake repair works to the 200 year old B-listed sea wall at Cullen, Moray.
The B-listed sea wall had defended Cullen harbour since the 19th century however a gaping hole was left in the stonework after it was battered by months of high tides. The historic structure was at risk of immediate collapse. The majority of works had to be undertaken during the night to accommodate the best tides.
The construction works involved:
- Removal of suspended copes and dismantling the remaining structure to make the working area safe.
- Collection of stone from the shore which had washed away from the structure. Review condition, size and shape of reclaimed material to ensure suitable for use in the final repair works.
- Removal of redundant mortar beds and friable material from the area surrounding the void.
- Cut concrete deck to remove existing bollard. Excavation of concrete deck. Drilling pins into the existing deck. Compacted infill and placement of A393 mesh panels. Reinstatement of existing bollard.
- Excavation of trench for rock armour foundation. Mass concrete pour into new found. Reconstruction of revetment to match existing.
- Blockwork equivalent to the existing structure was sourced. Rebuilding of the sea wall using existing and new stone. Cutting copes to suit the new wall. Placement of copes and pointing of the sea wall.
Works completed February 2018.
