Lochshell Engineering were appointed in June 2019 by Argyll & Bute Council to be the Principal Contractor for the design, supply and installation of all permanent and temporary works for the plating and cathodic protection of the Old Quay at Campbeltown, Argyll.
Campbeltown Old Quay was constructed during the early eighteenth century and has been subject to repairs and extensions during its lifetime. The quay is an infilled piled structure where wall C, date circa 1970 with Z sheet piles and walls C, D and F circa 1981 with U shaped piles.
The most recent repairs were undertaken by Lochshell Engineering to reinforce and protect from corrosion the sheet piles with reinforcing plates and installation of cathodic protection. The repairs extended from 2.0m below Chart Datum to 1.0m above Chart Datum.
The construction works involved:
- Seabed debris clearance and rock clearance including removal of rock debris wedged into the inner pan of the sheet piles.
- Removal of timber fenders and brackets to inspect the sheet pile damage beneath. Ultrasonic thickness measurements at both low water and splash zones for each of the piles were taken. Reinstallation of timber fenders and fixings.
- Preparation and welding of steel plates, installation of plates, anodes and brackets.
Works completed January 2020.
